St John Ambulance are offering a free course available to carers on Jersey over the course of the year.
St John Ambulance run a free Carers’ Support Programme for informal carers . Informal carers are those caring for a family member or friend, not receiving a salary for doing so. However , they may be receiving the carers allowance. Someone may find themselves caring as a result of illness, a loved one having dementia , following an accident or injury to suggest a few.
It’s a 4 session course, run 3/4 times a year depending on demand ( see the dates below )
The dates for 2022 Carers’ Support Programme are;
March
Thurs 3rd, Thurs 10th , Thurs 17th and Thurs 24th
April /May
Wed 27th, Wed 4th, Wed 18th, Wed 25th May
Oct /Nov
Sat 15th, 22nd, 29th and 5th of Nov.
We cover subjects such as:
What support and resources are available on island
Pressure area care
Nutrition
Medication advice
Basic safe handling and equipment and tools available t assist
Social Security visit to talk about Long term care and other related benefits.
Social worker visit to discuss assessment
Alarm systems
First Aid training
It is run at St John Ambulance at Midvale road from 10 am to 1pm and we provide parking and lunch . This is a free course due to generous sponsorship.
We also invite carers to join a Carers Support Group which is held monthly either inviting speakers and organisations to speak or present on a subject related to caring . Otherwise it may be a social event such as barb b q , picnic etc.
We are also in the early stages of setting up a companionship service which will provide respite to carers for a few hours a week or provide social interaction to those living on their own .
