We encourage charities who have members caring for family members in specialised fields to join Carers Jersey working in conjunction with these specialist groups to offer an umbrella organisation encompassing all the caring fraternities in the island ensuring we are all working towards one common aim – to improve the lives of carers.
Over the years Jersey Association of Carers Inc has been instrumental in bringing the Carers Allowance to a more realistic level and has worked and continues to work with Health and Social Services to ensure that an effective respite service is available to all. As a result of this pressure and lobbying a Carers Strategy for Jersey was finally drawn up and launched in June 2013 and this is kept under constant review with a revised Strategy adopted in 2017.
The Strategy Plan also contained proposals that people who wish to remain in their own home for as long as possible would be supported and individuals at home could receive a care package to provide professional care at home – ideas which have been promoted through the Long-term Health Care Plan now in place.
Communication with carers is therefore essential to ensure that they understand what benefits and support are available to them.
Carers Jersey has never received any financial support from the States of Jersey although it is regularly consulted and works in partnership with Health and Social Services for the delivery of support to Carers in the Island.
